Today, I’m rounding up 16 of my favorite stencil ideas for you to try out at home. Whether you’re making a sign for yourself, creating gifts, or hosting a paint party, these fun stenciled designs are sure to go over BIG TIME!

I love including fun stencils in my paint parties because they make beautiful designs almost too easy to create.

Complicated or intricate designs can look super intimidating, especially when you’ve never done them before. Luckily, stencils make painting super accessible for artists of all skill levels. This way, everyone at the paint party can feel confident about their results!

There’s something for everyone here. I’ve included designs for every occasion under the sea – from year-round decorations to seasonal favorites.

And, if you’d like to stock up on some gorgeous, easy-to-use stencils, I highly recommend you check out Essential Stencils (pssst – use code TEXASHEIDI for a sweet discount).

So without further ado, let’s get stenciling!

Stencil ideas FAQs

These are the questions I’m most asked about using stencils for paint parties. If I don’t answer your question here, feel free to ask in the comments down below – we can all learn from each other here!

How can you stencil without any bleeding?

Using stencils is easy peasy when you know the right steps. Here are a few tips to prevent bleeding and smudgy designs:

  • Press your stencil firmly to your surface to prevent any slipping.
  • Don’t overload your brush! Excess paint can squish under the stencil and create unwelcome blobs.
  • After adding paint to your brush, dab off most of your paint onto a paper towel. Your brush should be almost dry before applying. This is going to give you the precision you need!
  • Dab your paint; don’t brush or drag.
  • Remove your stencil by lifting it straight up – you don’t want a smudge at this step!
  • Clean your stencil after each use.

Do you remove a stencil when the paint is wet or dry?

Honestly, it depends on the product and its dry time.

In general, waiting to remove the stencil until your paint has dried down is preferred. This way, you can prevent streaking and create a super crisp design.

This, however, isn’t always possible during a tight turn-around at a paint party. Use quick-dry paint or grab a hair dryer for fast and easy stencil use!

How do I clean a stencil?

When cleaning your stencils, it’s important to do this ASAP! Dry paint is waaay harder to remove than the tacky stuff.

First, rinse your stencil under warm water, then clean with a gentle soap or a stencil cleaner with a gentle cloth.

Rinse to remove any excess soap, pat to dry, and your stencils are ready to store!

What are the best ways to store stencils?

There’s no one way to store stencils, though there are definitely some non-negotiables.

  1. Store your stencils flat to prevent any warping, bending, or *gasp* cracking!
  2. Only store clean stencils to prolong their lifespan.
  3. Label your storage so that you can easily find the stencils you need. There’s nothing worse than blindly rifling through a bucket of plastic stencils.

Personally, I store all of my many stencils in labeled bins, categorized by either season or holiday.

You can also store your stencils in a binder filled with clear, labeled folders or in pre-punched folders hanging from hooks or a pegboard.
