DIY door hangers FAQs
Here are a few questions I’m always asked about door-hanger projects. And if your question goes unanswered, never fear! Please put your question in the comments so that I can help you out.
How thick should door hangers be?
For door hangers, aim for your wood to be ¼ inch thick. This width is perfect because it’s thick enough for a sturdy sign without adding too much weight to the hanger.
Heavier signs are hard to hang and run the risk of falling!
A ¼ inch sign is also nice and flat, so it can hang tightly against the door. This is also great for the inside of closet or pantry doors, letting them shut snuggly when necessary.
How do you weatherproof a door hanger?
Because door hangers are most often used on exterior doors, a little weatherproofing is always a good idea!
Even if you have an overhang, moisture will wear down your gorgeous creations over time and will eventually rot the wood.
To protect your art, always use a craft sealant over your sign. You can also use waterproof paint for extra protection.
I like a spray-on sealant for extra convenience. Any brand should be fine…just ensure that it’s waterproof!

What kind of wood should I use for a door hanger?
Pine and plywood both make good options for outdoor door hangers. They’re easy to find, inexpensive, and lightweight. In other words, they’re pretty darn perfect for hanging-crafts of all types!
What do I use to hang my door hanger?
To hang your DIY door sign is really quite easy. You’ll need:
- Strong ribbon, twine, or jute
- Staple gun
- A nail or door hook
Take your twine of choice, and cut a 6-inch piece. Then, staple the ends in two places on your sign, creating a little loop.
Then, add a nail to your front door, or a self-adhesive door hook for a less permanent option. Hang your sign on the hook, and you’re off to the races!
Well, that’s just about everything you need to know about how to create, paint, teach, and enjoy DIY door hangers. I hope you can take some exciting design inspiration from my past projects and try them out for yourself. I think you’re going to love them!

How big are these door hangers?
Hi Pamela!
The round door hangers are 18″.
Thank you!!
So cute .. I wanna make them all
Thank you so much Tina!!!
I just finished a door hanger that is so thin that I’m concerned that staples would go right through it. The wood is so thin, it almost feels like balsam wood. I’m afraid it Will split.
How can I do a hanger for it?
Hi Linda! Oh no, I’m so sorry to hear this. Could you hot glue ribbon to the back of it or maybe glue another wood round to the back before stapling the hanger?
I hope these suggestions help.
Excellent information!
I’ve used plywood but after some outdoor use the edges start to separate. Am I using the right kind?
Hey there Jessica!
I use white wood from my local hardware store. It holds up pretty well 😀
