I just wanted to take a moment to talk to you all. If you have had family and friends that have not understood what you wanted to do with your paint party business, be it building an in-person paint party business or online paint party business then this post is for you. I know you want to share your dreams with everyone, but sometimes not everyone is going to understand your dreams or this world. They will not understand what you are trying to do for your family and even for your business. I jotted some tips down and just knew I had to share them with you.
Shout it From the Rooftops
Sometimes we get really, really excited about something and we want to shout it from the rooftops! But, people who love you will give you bad advice. I remember a very close family member telling me I was crazy for quitting my teaching job.
I was a teacher for 10 years so to them it was crazy! That’s not their fault for thinking that. You have to remember that. Don’t take that comment personally. That family member grew up with a normal, traditional job. A 9-5, one that you don’t leave, you stay with it for decades. That’s just what you do.
Times Have Changed
Now the world is different. Can I get an Amen for that? Everything has changed. For example, if you are super excited about joining the Profitable Paint Party Challenge and a friend or family member responds with “Why would you do that?” or “Why would you paint?”. Here is a great way to handle that situation.
I started using this rule about 5-7 years ago. I said, if they’re not doing what I want to do at their age, then I will listen kindly but I will not take their advice. The reason? If they don’t have the results I want, why am I going to take their advice? It’s kind of like someone trying to give you marriage advice but they have had a very sad marriage or financial advice but they are in debt.
Just exhale and don’t be angry with them. Don’t let it get it to you, remember it is coming from a good place. Our family and friends love us and are coming from a good place to protect us. They don’t want us to experience the hurt they have experienced. Write thi down: “Their understanding is not required for your progress.”. I heard that on a podcast the other day and now I’m obsessed! I’ve been writing it everywhere.
We All Have Our Own Form of Therapy
We all have our own form of therapy. Mine is painting, my husband Bobby? He loves to fish. He will wake up at 3:00 AM to go fishing and knows all the things you would want or need, fish finders, depth finders all those things. You know, if he joined a 3-Day fishing challenge, I would be like, that’s kind of dumb, like, I don’t need to be part of that. So, just like my husband loves fishing, I love painting. I want all the tools and want to know all the tricks and get all the tips. So, when Bobby says he wants all these new lures and I’m like, do you really need 450 fishing lures? I probably shouldn’t respond that way. I should say, I’m happy for you.
People who you love are going to give you bad advice, be ok knowing their understanding is not required for your progress. Protect your heart. You may be so excited about whatever it is you are going to do but your family has no idea. I can’t tell you how many people think I have a starving artist paint party business. They have no idea of the potential.
Know Who You Can Share Your Dreams With
I know who I can share my dreams with, I know who is wide open. I can not only tell them my dreams but they are going to jump on board with everything I have to say and even do Prom photo shoots with me! Those are the people you can go to with your big crazy ideas. Then there are people where you know you have to protect your heart, you don’t have to get rid of them, just know that you love them and respect them but you don’t have to tell them all of your dreams.
If you are ready to join a bunch of people like you join the Profitable Paint Party with Heidi HERE!
