Today I have a really cool piece that I’m going to be painting using stencils. It’s a magnolia bowl! No, not the LSU – Ole Miss Football rivalry but a wood magnolia bowl. Now, this was first time painting on a magnolia bowl so I wasn’t really sure if would go well or not. I used some super cute stencils from Essential Stencil. What is a magnolia bowl?
It is a wood serving bowl or decorative bowl made from the wood of Southern Magnolias. The one I painted on was more decorative, long, slender and shallow. You can get these in a ton of different shapes and sizes!
Painting a Magnolia Bowl with Stencils
I really wanted the word ‘marshmallows’ on the side of the bowl. So, I just used some white paint and liner brush to paint inside the stencil. I did go back and clean it up a little bit with my liner brush. You could also use a stencil brush, just remember to offload!
I grabbed some of my favorite fall colors, red, orange and yellow. I love DecoArt Americana craft acrylic paint. Using a stencil brush, I created kind of an ombre effect for the leaves. I didn’t even clean my brush between colors! Remember once you paint this type of item it is no longer food safe. You can also seal it with a polyurethane spray.
What else can you paint?
That’s it! This was a fun and simple painting project on an unexpected item. There are so many things you can paint, ceramics, porch signs, door hangers and magnolia bowls! It doesn’t just have to be a canvas.
